Alternator Fan Shroud / Tinware Query...

'74 1303 1.3 Engine code AB

Hi all, just taken off my alternator & shroud/tinware for a clean - took the fan tinware apart - putting it back together I've noticed this hole :

a. what is this hole for ?
b. after reassembly have I got the hole in right place (as it could quite easily be at the bottom of the alternator if I flip the tinware 180 degrees).

Also there is some sort of a air duct on the top of the tinware:

again have I got the orientation of this correct or should it be at the bottom ?

Haynes manual shows no hole or air duct in the exploded diagram of this tinware/alternator :-(

As always, thanks in advance. Radley1303.

Note to self : take a bl00dy 'before' photo next time !!

Making Plans... Open For Suggestions

With the 1776 still going strong in the '74 Super - and in the capable hands of my son - I'm starting a new midlife crisis project. Granted this new engine will be going in a 1500lb fiberglass buggy and not in a Super, but it's a VW engine none the less. I'm hopping that we can have a good brainstorming session that may prove useful for someone wanting to build a snappy engine for their own project. I promise that only the engine will be discussed outside of the loung area!

I want a smooth, long pulling, driving engine. A real cruising, 500mi to the next VW show, up and over the pass and into the desert at 75mph kind of engine. Perhaps an occasional pull on the strip just because I can... I see no reason for this engine to exceed 5500 RPM.

With that in mind:

AS41 case (I have a couple lying around)
74-76mm forged CW crank (same price point as a 69mm forged CW crank and not nearly as much messing about as say an 82mm)
5.5" H Beam rods
Cam - to be determined suggestions?
94mm B pistons
40x30.5 ported heads - optimized for torque not high RPM
40 or 44IDF carbs (TBD) with outerware sleeves over the air filters of course
lightened flywheel? The jury is still out on this one I didn't do one with the kid's 1776 and I don't miss it...
1-5/8" sidwinder exhaust with no heat
Cooling will be a modified stock fan shroud like the one that Ryan did. I'll remove and smooth out the heater ducts.

So, let the brainstorming begin!

2yr Engine Rebuild

'74 1303 1.3

Hi all,

Circa 2 yrs ago I stripped down my 1.3 twin port engine (splitting the AS41 case) but due to a growing family etc it inevitably got put to the bottom of the 'to-do' list... Fast forward to the present day and I've finally put the engine back together (new bearings, rings, seals etc) but as I put the final piece of tinware on last night I've realized I have put the cylinder heads on the opposite sides of what they were originally (I marked which was which 2yrs ago, but forgot I marked them when putting them back on) - doh... So my question is does this pose a serious problem or are the heads the same and can be interchanged between left side/right side of the engine ? If I have to change them round then so be it but just wondered if there is any detriment to the engine them being on the opposite sides of what they were.

As always, any help appreciated. Kind rgds, Radley1303.

Blower Motor

I think I've brought this up before, but who's got one? Mine is cooked, I do not want to buy a brand new one from Germany because it is just wayyy too expensive. It's just this blower motor is just wayyy too handy to eliminate and I don't want to try rigging something up. Let me know please, I'll pay for the shipping because I'm probably out of the way for most of you to get a cheap shipping or soemthing. It's just I'm in the processing of overhauling my car currently and this is on the to do list. Thanks for any help people!

Who Makes The Best Body Replacement Panels.

Hey Im new to the VDub scene, I built a 1972 Honda CB 500 bobber and ended up trading it for a 1972 VW Super that needs some work. It runs and drives but has some typical Wisconsin Rust issues. So I want to get rid of the rust and cut out the passenger rear floor from the battery acid and the rear corners of the heater channels and right behind the front tires, there are a few companies that make replacement panels but I was looking for some feedback so I purchase the best panels. Thanks a lot this is going to get interesting.

Performance Strut Topper

Here are some picts of of my new upper strut bearings. They are adjustable for camber and caster. As soon as I get them mounted I will post more picts and after I get to drive with them for a bit I will post performance results. They are getting mounted atop my new MAXX struts. They are easy to adjust with no need to lift the car, just loosen the bolts, slide the bearing plate to the desired setting and tighten. There are reference marks on the bearing plate so a setting can be recorded and easily adjusted back to the same setting. For instance, a street setting and a track setting.

MAXX Struts

Strut Bearings

Engine Installation

Man I am beginning to feel like a complete dummy. This is all new to me so please forgive my ignorance. So how do I install the engine back into the car with dual Webers installed on the engine. With them on, the engine is over 34" wide but the opening that they must come up thru from the underside of the car is only what, 27-28 " wide. How does that work? Must I install the carbs after I install the engine? That seems almost impossible, there is not enough clearance to do that. I bought the space saver manifold and linkage kit but that is still too wide to go thru the opening. By the way the space saver manifold kit will not work with the stock standard fan shroud as the carbs will not clear the shroud. Another expensive rookie mistake. I guess I will need the smaller shrouds I have seen in the catalogs. Thanks for all the advice you all have given me so far. I come to you again scratching my head. Thanks again.

4 Wheel Disc Brakes

I got the 20.6mm bore master cylinder (stock is 19mm) in order to push the needed volume of brake fluid. I'm curious to know what everyone else uses as I'm not real satisfied with this one. My pedal goes closer to the floor than I'd like (but it is better than a stock cylinder).
