My '78 CEII has a black anodized telescopic antenna. By all accounts it appears to be a correct VW antenna. However, I've never seen one in black from the factory. Has anyone come across a black antenna before or recall any of the SE models that did? Just curious. Thanks.

I have seen black retractables three times before. I assumed they were aftermarket but I really don't know. Twice I asked the car's owner where they got theirs, and twice the answer was it was there when they got the car. The third time was a Sports Bug, and I never saw the owner. (Looked especially sharp on it.)

I wanted one for my '71 but never saw one offered. I remember seeing a fully-retractable silver one I was considering at the time my car was totalled. I hesitated as I was still holding out hope I could find a black one.

By the way, since the SB predates your CEII by five years, I have to think the SB was an aftermarket one or an after thought VW issue. If it was a VW accessory for that many years, I think we would have seen more of them.

How hard is it to disconnect and see if there is a VW part number on it?

Its tucked away along the inside of the fender, covered in tape, of course, with the car being at the paint shop. It doesn't fully retract, just like the usual VW antennas. The base and the antenna itself, aside from the color, are exactly the same as stock VW antennas I've had in the past. Its definitely not something seen everyday, that's for sure. Definitely going to look for a VW number when I get the car back, whenever that might be (a month perhaps).

The ones I've seen new were after market. They were called "Ebony Classics." I have a couple in my garage for my Sport Bug. Try eBay.

Go over to The Samba and look up user "Antonio Trejo". He can supply you with an all black stock antenna. I believe it's a Hella part.
