since I'm going to work on my 73 wiper system,
I made a diagram for both intermittent wiper and electric windshield washer.

This diagram is basically a German optional intermittent wiper diagram.
I added wiring for windshield washer borrowed from Porsche 944 diagram (53c, V5).

my switch is from early Rabbit but some 74-later Beetles have all necessary terminals.

Those late switches have 7pin connector while 73-earliers have 5pin.
Other than that, they are in same shape.

I exchanged the connectors so that I can install late switch to early steering column.
(easy snap on assembly. take care not to break the prongs)
There are only 5pins, compared to 6 wires to use.
1 wire (windshield washer) loses his home, but there is much space for the wire get through in the steering column.
I need to attach a new terminal to the wire, though.

If your car is 74-later, you don't have to do this conversion.

The relay must be early water-cooled VW or early Porsche.
Joel mentioned that later relays are different from this diagram.

you can use any washer pump.
I use a pump for Porsche 924 to make it like Genuine.
it is also same as some early water cooled VWs.

The intermittent Relays from later watercooled VWs (7 pin) are different system and don't work in aircooled cars without some wiring modifications


To save making another sticky on the topic for anyone interested in adapting the later watercooled system which also has the variable delay option I wrote a tech article on it here

I made a diagram for #99 relay based on Joel's article.
Joel's diagram is very easy to understand, but I wanted 53c terminal and familiar look & feel.

Wire colors are similar to genuine Super Beetle,
and some additional wire colors are similar to '90s Golf.

Parts written in red are what you need to get.
Part numbers don't mean nothing.
I used numbers that wouldn't used on genuine diagram.

E99: 171 953 519 or similar
J99: 357 955 531 or similar
J100: BOSCH 0 332 014 151 or any 5 pin relay
V99: VDO 246-075-021-006C or any pump

yes, the VDO pump i listed is current oem part for porsche.
i bought it as bmw 2002's.
maybe you can find it at a junk yard.
(if you want genuine look)

but i have a question before work.

87a will be ON while the switch is in both intermittent ON or washer ON.
does J signal override while both T & J are ON?

today, i did all job.

intermittent always ON while Ign. is ON....

i will check what is wrong tomorrow.
it must be S terminal problem.

If it's doing that it just means the change over relay isn't powering up.

So either its not getting the ground from the wiper switch or the power from the fusebox.

it was easy mistake.
i connected S wire to 53c terminal, and 53c wire to S terminal.

after corrected, it works perfectly.

one thing no good is it's sunny today.

Hi Guys,

I'm about to go ahead with the intermittent wipers conversion of my '75 1303 and I have a queastion:

Do I need a new or different wipers motor for intermittents?

I have not seen any indication on that in your comments or The Samba forums, but I've been told that I might need a different type of motor.
By the way, I'm planning to use the ".99" relay.

Hi everybody.

Thank Joel and Takashi for this usefull info, now my 1973 super beetle works with intermitant wipers, I want to share my adaptation.

I used the original wiper control without S1 terminal, so I installed an extra contact in order to get stalk intermitant position signal, it because I did not want to use an external switch.

I took this contacts from an old dvd player.

a couple of pictures.
