I know alot of you don't check in to the Special Edition forum so you may not know. This morning Bill lost multiple cars in a garage fire including the Sports Bug. The good new's is noone was hurt. I don't know about the rest of you but I was a big fan of that car and will truly miss it. I just hope once the dust settles there will be another Sports in the making. Bill, you know I'll be here with some parts of course. I used Bill's car on my web site as representative of the 73SportsBug A very cool car lost.

It's always hard to loose cars like that - but if the builder is ok, that's what really matters.

Well, I am waiting for the fire investigator at the moment, so hopefully today I will have some sort of reason for all this. It is so hard though, I have left the house a few times now the last few days, and it is horrible driving up to it and seeing everything like it is. I will advise at this point that everyone make sure you know exactly how much insurance you have and what covers what. I didn't have comp on any of my cars, and the homeowners doesn't cover them. I sould not have a problem getting the money for the garage and all the other stuff in it, but you read that correctly, I lost all the cars completely.

Man....I know somewhat of what you feel, Bill. I lost my 76 (75) LaGrande, Esther, a few years ago to an arson and had nothing left I could rebuild from at all. I have you in my thoughts, my friend. If there is anything to start a 'rebuild' from, I HIGHLY recommend doing so. cry.gif

I am not completely air cooledless. Is that a term? I still have a 71 Squareback that was in NJ at the time, and 66 bug that was a drag car in the 80's. That car is pretty rusty though, lots of body was trimmed away to save weight, it was right next to the garage, but majoriety of damage it recieved was the gutter melting over it. There are some scrapes in the fiberglass front, but it didn't burn. I'm gonna try to get the wheels off the bug and maybe pull the trans(if it's still intact) but I don't know if it would be safe to trust metal that got that hot. The passenger window is melted around the regulator. I did have a bunch of parts in the basement, so not all my VW stuff is gone, just the big/heavy and expensive stuff. The gearbox in the 73 Square is completely gone. There is a main shaft sticking out of the clutch, and that's it. I can't imagine how hot it was in there. The trees around my yard are slowly telling the tale though. I am so glad to still have a house. My neighbor's siding is melted a bit!

My house caught on fire the year we moved into it. The fire investigator concluded that a landscape crew member had tossed his cigarette out and blew it with the leaf blower into the pine needles next to my house catching them on fire. My wife was in the back yard and happened to come around to the garage to get some tools when she saw it burning. She yelled for me and I ran out and put it out with my water hose. The landscaper paid for the repairs and all was good. Luckily the cars were on the street at the time.

Wow, that sucks, your insurance agent does not sound like he was on top of thing too much. The stuff you keep in a garage burns really hot, hope something is salvageable

For anyone curious, we have some pictures of the fire posted here on the Central Jersey VW website. You can see some of the damage to the house in the background of one of the pics.

Wow that is really hot to make cinders of everything.
Is the garage a total loss too or can they rebuilt from the walls up?
I can't imagine something that devastating ever happening, 4 cars in one shot.
Still its just stuff, and best of all you and your family are okay thumbsup.gif

We will build a new garage. It's going to be bigget and better. I think it will also be a little further from the house. It is gonna be hard to replace the Sports though. I think if I do get another sports, I will try to find a good original car, that I just need to add the motor and suspension to.

No real progress yet. The bug is currently rusting in my yard. I am hoping that I might be able to salvage the trans, and the long block. I am also gonna save the wheels. I got rid of the Squareback today. Hopefully the rest of the mess will get cleaned up soon.

how odd you just updated this today... i just called the fire department to get a copy of the report for my bug's fire... i dont know why i want it... i guess that's why it has taken me 6 weeks to the day to ask for it :( and my new bug keeps having these minor little issues... i really miss my blue 74 standard... the only standard bug i ever really drove... it loved to cruise at 85... i hope it's enjoying it's new life as a dune buggy.

I was just out driving in town, and I saw a column of smoke rising, from the other side of my neighborhood. I drove over to see a BMW on the side of the road in flames. What is with all the fires this year?

when i pulled on to the interstate this morning in the dark and fog there was a flipped semi on the side of the rd that had burned and blocked all south bound traffic... dont know what happened... but i heard 3 people died...

oh and i think i neglected to comment that i stopped and gave this girl my fire extinguisher monday....

atleast she was able to get her belongings out of her car... i sympathized with her and went 20 miles out of my way to give her a ride home as she is new in the area and knows no one... kind of scary my 10 BC fire extenguisher didn't really do anything for the fire...

They make the ColdFire system in handheld fire extinguishers too and I believe many of them are refillable.

I saw some testing done be a fire marshall and they used the popularly available fire extinguishers (powdered, halon etc.) and the ColdFire extingiusher not only put them out completely, but the object would not reignite. The other extingiushers either did not put out the fire completely or they would allow reignition of the test object. In fact, the fire manshall guy reached down and picked up the test object right after he put out the fire with the ColdFire extinguisher. He said that the ColdFire compound takes the heat out of the fire in addition to putting it out which makes reignition much harder. It stuff is non-toxic and biodegradable and does not need to be rinsed off since it leaves no residue.

I brought the tow truck home after work today and loaded the remains of the sports up. It's going off to the yard Friday morning. Even in the condition that it's in, it will still be strange that it's really gone. It will be nice though, not having to look at the burned out shell any longer. I think I have accepted the reality I'm in, but it is still hard so times to accept that it is all gone.

Time does help heal wounds, and now that a 1/2 year has passed, I have accepted the place I'm in. I focus on the future projects, and try to not dwell in the past. I am very thankful for not loosing my house, and for all the support of everyone here.

A moment of silence... Today is the year anniversary of the fire. I can't believe the car's been gone that long.
